Franciszka Halamai and her daughter Helena lived here and, at great personal risk, sheltered Jewish families from Nazi persecution.
Thanks to their courage, 16 Jewish people were saved. In recognition of their humanitarian act, Franciszka and Helena Halamai were awarded the honorary title "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial, which recognizes non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
Today, the house stands as a symbol of humanity, compassion, and civic courage. It serves as a reminder of the tragic chapters in Sokal's history while honoring those who, despite facing mortal danger, chose to help others. An informational plaque beside the building tells visitors the story of the Halamai family and their remarkable act of bravery.
