Located in the heart of Zhytomyr on Castle Hill, it introduces visitors to the nature, history, and cultural heritage of the Zhytomyr region from ancient times to the present day.
The museum's collections include more than 160,000 exhibits, covering archaeology, ethnography, natural history, regional history, and fine arts. Among its most valuable collections are archaeological finds from Paleolithic sites and the Raikovetske hillfort, a unique zoological collection of Polissia wildlife, traditional folk clothing, weaving and embroidery from the Zhytomyr region, and a collection of Western European paintings dating from the 16th to the early 20th century.
Special exhibitions are dedicated to the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921, the era of the Ukrainian People's Republic, the Holodomor, and other significant chapters of Ukraine's history. The museum also regularly hosts temporary art and historical exhibitions, cultural events, and educational programs.
The museum building itself is an architectural landmark from the early 20th century, designed in the Neo-Baroque style with Rococo Revival elements. It forms an integral part of the historic Castle Hill ensemble and is considered one of Zhytomyr's architectural highlights.
Today, the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local Lore is an important scientific and cultural center, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the rich history, nature, and traditions of the Zhytomyr Polissia region.
