Established as the city's Renaissance marketplace, it has preserved its original layout and continues to impress visitors with its harmonious proportions and remarkable ensemble of historic buildings.
The square has a classic square layout, and its dimensions closely match those of Zhovkva Castle—a symbolic design that reflected the idea of equality between the city's owner and its residents. Over the centuries, it hosted markets, festive processions, public gatherings, and celebrations. Today, it remains the main venue for community events and cultural life in Zhovkva.
Surrounding Vicheva Square are the city's most important landmarks, including Zhovkva Castle, the Town Hall, St. Lawrence's Church, and historic Renaissance townhouses. One of the square's most distinctive features is its arcaded galleries, known as pidsinnia, among the oldest surviving examples of their kind in Eastern Europe and a true architectural hallmark of Zhovkva.
During the reconstruction carried out between 2003 and 2008, the square was enhanced with granite paving, benches, and flower beds while carefully preserving its historic character. Archaeologists also uncovered the foundation of the former pillory, where public punishments were once carried out, offering a fascinating glimpse into the city's past.
Vicheva Square is not only an architectural gem of the Renaissance but also a place where history comes alive in every stone, inviting visitors to experience the unique atmosphere of one of Ukraine's best-preserved historic towns.
