In the spring of 1915 when Shaliapin travelled from Kyiv to Katerynoslav, he stayed in Cherkasy. He lived in the hotel "Slovianskiy and sang in the casino.

With Shaliapin one interesting legend is connected. When the singer was preparing for his performance, he saw a cat in the hotel, which was very melodious mewed . He gave fish to it, and may have forgotten about the cat. But after the concert Shaliapin felt bad and feltt hat he lost voice. While all were looking for a medicine, turning the whole hotel upside down, the singer admitted a cat to his room and fell sleep. Legend says that in the morning he felt fine and has already forgotten about his illness. And most importantly - he turned to the voice, from which "buzzed lamps and window panes, trembled decanters in the cupboard and buttons at policeman at the intersection of police." Finally, Shaliapin thanked the master of teh hotel for the cat doctor and drove away. The cat remained. Since then said that if pet cat behind the ear, one will have a voice "like Shaliapin".
