Solonets-Tuzly Lake

Solonets-Tuzly Lake is a unique mud-and-salt lake located near the Black Sea coast in the recreational area of Rybakivka village, Mykolaiv Region.

It is one of the most remarkable natural attractions in southern Ukraine, known for its healing mud, salt deposits, and picturesque landscapes.

One of the lake’s most distinctive features is its unusual color contrast: a layer of white salt forms on the surface, while pink salt deposits can be seen underneath. Due to its high mineral content, the lake’s mud and salt are believed to have therapeutic properties, as confirmed by studies conducted by the Ukrainian Research Institute of Children's Balneology and Physiotherapy.

The size of the lake’s water surface changes throughout the year depending on seasonal and weather conditions. During dry periods, the lake can almost completely dry out, revealing vast salt-covered expanses. A dam crosses the narrowest part of the lake, offering beautiful panoramic views of the water and surrounding landscapes.

In addition to its natural significance, the lake also holds historical value. At the end of the 19th century, writer Maxim Gorky worked at the local salt fields, and the events of his autobiographical story “On the Salt” are connected with this area.

Together with the Tyligul and Berezan estuaries, the lake’s territory is recognized as an Important Bird Area, playing a significant role in the conservation of bird diversity. Today, Solonets-Tuzly attracts nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking unique scenery and the opportunity to experience the wild beauty of the Black Sea region.
