It is the burial place of Israel Baal Shem Tov (the Besht), the founder of Hasidism, whose grave is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hasidic Jews from around the world.
The necropolis is situated on a hill overlooking the Buzhok River. Its history dates back to the 16th century, with the oldest surviving tombstones dating from 1555. Part of the historic cemetery has been preserved, containing around two hundred matzevot (Jewish gravestones), many of which feature intricate carvings and symbolic ornaments characteristic of the Jewish funerary tradition of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Adjacent to the grave of Baal Shem Tov are a synagogue and a memorial complex that welcome thousands of pilgrims and visitors each year. The Medzhybizh Jewish Necropolis is a 16th–19th century historical monument listed in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine and remains an important site for preserving Jewish cultural and spiritual heritage.
