Desenka

Desenka is a small, picturesque branch of the Desna River, part of the water system in the Kyiv region.

Desenka, also known as Chortoryi, is a distributary of the Dnipro River that originates near the mouth of the Desna River by the village of Zazymia and flows into the Venetian Channel within the city limits of Kyiv. It runs along the eastern side of Trukhaniv Island and stretches for 13 kilometers, forming a unique natural landscape that blends wild nature with the proximity of a major city.

The river has a slow current, clear water, and a sandy bottom, making it a favorite recreational spot for residents of Kyiv and nearby suburbs. Along its banks, you’ll find numerous beaches, boat stations, green areas, and summer cottages. In summer, it attracts anglers, swimmers, kayakers, and those simply enjoying the peace and quiet of nature. Due to its shallow depth and gentle flow, Desenka is safe for swimming, especially for children.

According to geographical data, the river valley is about 1 km wide. The average depth is 9–11 meters, with a maximum depth of 16 meters. The floodplain includes lakes with a total area of 1.5 km², as well as some wetlands. The basin covers an area of 68 km², and the river’s width can reach up to 100 meters in places.

Desenka plays an important ecological role, supporting the biodiversity of the riverbank's flora and fauna. It is not only a picturesque place for walks but also a living part of the ecosystem, thriving in harmony with the city.
