Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bar

The Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the oldest and most valuable religious landmarks in the town of Bar and an 18th-century architectural monument of national significance.

Located in the southern part of the town, the church remains an important center of spiritual life and a significant part of Podillia's historical heritage.

Construction of the church began in 1755 and was completed in the late 1750s. It was consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity. For centuries, it has remained one of the principal Orthodox churches of Bar, surviving numerous historical events while preserving its spiritual importance.

In the 19th century, the church underwent a major restoration after its dome was damaged. During this renovation, it acquired its present appearance, including the distinctive three-tier bell tower that has become one of its defining architectural features. Built in the Late Baroque style, the church is distinguished by its harmonious proportions, restrained decorative elements, and characteristic octagonal dome.

The church houses several treasured sacred relics, including a revered icon of the Mother of God listed among Ukraine's national sacred treasures, as well as an icon of Saint Nicholas. According to tradition, the latter was brought to Bar from the Italian city of Bari by the Polish Queen Bona Sforza in the 16th century.

Unlike many other religious buildings, the Holy Dormition Church was not destroyed during the 20th century and continued to function even throughout the Soviet era. Following a major restoration in 1975, it preserved its historic appearance and remains an active place of worship today.

Today, the Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of Bar's most important architectural and spiritual landmarks, attracting pilgrims, tourists, and everyone interested in the history, art, and cultural heritage of Podillia.
