This city has many heritage sites including the most famous - Tarasova hill, or monastic mountain, which is a burial site for the world-famous genius of Ukrainian people - Taras Shevchenko. Here, a memorial complex and historical- cultural reserve is located, the first in the country gained national status. Shevchenko's grave looks like a huge mound over the Dnipro river. There are 342 steps leading to the mount.
Kaniv was founded by Prince Yaroslav the Wise. Old Russian Cathedral of the Assumption, built by Prince of Kiev Vsevolod is still preserved, as well as the stone field - Sculpture Park.
